Permanent Secretary for National Disaster Management Office Meleti Bainimarama is calling on communities living in low lying areas to be alert and to continually monitor the weather. “We’re looking at warning people living in low lying areas to be very wary of the weather should it change especially when darkness falls because of the risk of river banks flooding.”
With the tropical disturbance part of a slow moving system, heavy and frequent rain is expected to be a major concern over the coming days. Bainimarama adds that all District Commissioners and Officers have been alerted and emergency responses are being put in place including the review and activation if need be of evacuation centers.
Director for the Fiji Meteorological Service, Ravin Kumar says the current system is expected to intensify over the next 24 to 48 hours bringing more rain and strong winds.
