Media Asosiesen blong Vanuatu (MAV) in partnership with Earth Journalism Network (EJN) are holding a three-day training workshop on Climate Change for Vanuatu journalists, opening this morning at the Climate Change Office in Port Vila.
The workshop will be officially opened by the Director Climate Change, David Gibson.
Fifteen journalists from Daily Post, 96 BuzzFM, VBTC’s Radio Vanuatu, Televisen blong Vanuatu (TBV) and Paradise FM98, Capitol FM107 and Independent newspaper, Transparency International Vanuatu (TIV) and the students from the Vanuatu Institute of Technology Journalism School.
The workshop will be facilitated by James Fahn of Earth Journalism Network and Lagipoiva Cherelle Jackson of Samoa where a similar workshop has been held.
Topics covered will include the science of climate change, climate change journalism – challenges and best practices, climate change from multiple angles, climate change resilience in Vanuatu and linking climate change to communities.
On Wednesday, participants will go on a field day to the Sino-Van fisheries facility at Blacksands in just outside of Port Vila where discussions are expected to centre on climate changes impacts on fisheries.
Everyday participants will be encouraged to produce stories from discussions in the training for their news organizations.
This is the first ever training for journalists on climate change issues run by professionals from EJN and there will also be local experts from agriculture, forestry, livestock, Climate Change to speak to the participants.
