Remengesau calls for support to protect Dolphins in Palau.
Hours before leaving office, the President of Palau, Tommy Remengesau made a personal appeal to friends and oceans partners to donate to a local non-profit organisation to rescue dolphins.
Remengesau leaves office today as the new President Surangel Whipps Jnr gets sworn into office.
On Wednesday Remengesau appealed to friends and oceans partners to support and fund the local non-profit organisation, Dolphins Pacific Marine Park project to rescue dolphins.
“As the COVID-19 pandemic persists into a new year, I am writing to ask for your help. This pandemic has had radical impacts on people and communities around the world. It has disrupted work and travel patterns, and rewritten our daily routines.
“We must band together in these troubled times, and we cannot forget the animals we love.
“Here in Palau, the disruption of tourism has led to a painful economic situation. Businesses are struggling to get by, some with almost no revenue. We will make it through, but there is a local non-profit that needs help to feed and care for precious rescue animals. That non-profit is Dolphins Pacific Marine Park.
“The Dolphin Project at Dolphins Pacific is a meaningful, world-renown educational and research programme that brings people – and especially children – back to nature. The namesake dolphins of this marine park have been rescued after run-ins with commercial fishing vessels, and they now live in beautiful, comfortable conditions, said Remengesau.
He said the park is struggling to keep food in the water without visitors. The Palau government has done what it can to subsidise operations, but to be frank we are in a difficult financial situation ourselves.
This pandemic is affecting everyone, and some of us do not have much to spare. But if we come together, small contributions could make a real difference to the health of these incredible creatures, and the future of this valuable programme, said Remengesau.
