The Pacific Islands News Association, Internews Earth Journalism Network, Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner, and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) are proud to announce the inaugural “Pasifika Environews Awards”. The awards will honor exemplary reporting and photography/videography that sets a standard for environment, ocean, and climate change reporting in the Pacific.
There are 5 categories of awards:
- SPREP Best Environment Story – USD $1000
- SPREP Best Environment Video/Picture- USD $500
- OPOC Best Ocean Story- USD $1000
- OPOC Best Ocean Picture/Video- USD $500
- Pasifika Environews Best Climate Change Story- USD $1000
- Pasifika Environews Best Climate Change Picture/Video- USD $500
Who can participate: Submissions are accepted from journalists and photographers/videographers representing news outlets including freelancers in the Pacific. Entries for all categories are unlimited.
What are we looking for?
- Environment, Ocean, Climate Change stories/pictures/videos that have created an impact in communities.
- Stories/pictures/videos that have put the spotlight on the impacts of development on the environment, ocean and in turn communities
- Stories/pictures/videos that have highlighted the impacts of climate change on communities as well as the resilience and innovation of Pacific people to cope with these impacts
Eligibility: All eligible work must have been published or broadcast from May 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023. If the original work is not in English, please provide English-language translations in addition to the original work as an attachment. Entries must be your own work.

- Please submit written content in MS Word or PDF
- For video, .mp4, .wmv, or .mov are preferred.
- For photography, .jpeg, .png, or .pdf are preferred
Proof of publication is necessary for all
Deadline: Completed entries are due on May 1, 2023 (DEADLINE EXTENDED to MAY 7, 2023). Email entries and queries to pasifikaenvironews01@gmailcom
Judging Criteria: A panel of judges will look at entries and judge them based on journalism skill, ability to engage audience, relevance, accuracy, factualness, and proficiency in the medium. Winners will be announced on World Ocean Day on June 8.

Pasifika Environews is a Geojournalism website supported by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network and managed by the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) with content contributions from Pacific journalists and PINA’s regional news service, PACNEWS.
Pasifika is a geographic and ethnic term that describes inhabitants and diaspora of any of the three major sub-regions of Oceania. These are the Melanesians which comprise Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the Kanaks of New Caledonia. The Micronesians cover the islands in the north Pacific, namely, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Kiribati, Nauru, Palau and the Republic of Marshall Islands. The Polynesian group of islands is made up of American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau and Tuvalu.
