Regional ocean policy and governance dialogue aimed at addressing challenges and boosting cooperation in Pacific Island countries’ ocean governance efforts

Nadi, Fiji, hosted a 4-day regional ocean policy and governance dialogue.

The aim of this event was to delve into the Pacific Islands Regional Ocean Policy, which underscores Pacific Island country leaders’ commitment to effective ocean governance.

Within the Pacific region, the landscape of ocean-related work is increasingly complex, marked by often competing, rather than complementary, policies and initiatives across various levels. This scenario poses a challenge to achieving broader policy objectives, such as those outlined in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. This dynamic isn’t conducive to the desired promotion and achievement of these objectives. Instead, it mirrors the wide array of stakeholder interests in ocean health and resilience, necessitating efficient coordination to attain synergy.

Over a decade after the endorsement of the Framework for the Pacific Oceanscape by Forum Leaders in 2010, a timely opportunity emerges on the cusp of implementing the 2050 Strategy. This juncture invites a comprehensive assessment of progress in regional and global ocean initiatives. This assessment entails surveying the current landscape to identify gaps and challenges. It seeks to create a proactive regional action plan that addresses existing issues and anticipates emerging challenges in ocean management. This approach should encompass significant policy shifts and developments at both regional and global levels.

The forthcoming dialogue aims to offer stakeholders a unique vantage point to view ocean governance holistically, spanning national and regional scopes. This endeavor would undoubtedly encompass an overview of existing regional ocean policy initiatives and governance frameworks, alongside the management of global ocean initiatives and emerging concerns. The ultimate goal is to shape forward-looking action plans, primarily at the regional and national levels.

Furthermore, the dialogue strives to assemble all stakeholders, fostering awareness among ocean-focused parties to encourage cooperation rather than competition. Strategic partnerships will be forged, and pathways to enhance coherence, coordination, and implementation at all levels will be identified. These collective efforts aim to set a fresh course for the region within the ocean policy realm and for the times ahead.

The event was scheduled from Monday, 21 August to Friday, 25 August. The forum anticipates impactful discussions and fostering collaboration surrounding ocean policy and governance.
