The President of India, Droupadi Murmu reaffirmed India’s commitment to tackling climate change and its effects, such as rising sea levels, which threaten both nations.
Addressing the Fiji Parliament Tuesday, Murmu stressed the critical roles both nations play in combating these global challenges.
“Fiji today is recognised around the world for its growing contribution to our common efforts focused on two major global challenges, climate change and addressing human conflicts,” Murmu said.
“Whether it is shaping the global dialogue on climate change or voicing the concerns of the ocean states, Fiji has been contributing immensely to the global good.
India greatly values and applauds the increasingly prominent roles played by Fiji around the world,” she said.
She emphasised the shared vulnerabilities of India and Fiji to the impacts of climate change, particularly the threat of rising sea levels.
“As a large developing country, frequently exposed to the uncertainties of nature, India also knows very well the deep impact of climate change. That is why we are committed to doing our best as a responsible member of the world.”
Murmu said under India’s G20 Presidency last year, the focus was placed on sustainable development and climate change, captured in the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
Murmu highlighted that India has significantly reduced its emission intensity and achieved 40 percent of its installed electric capacity through non-fuel sources.
“From 2017 to 2023, India added around 100 gigawatts of installed electric capacity, with approximately 80 percent coming from non-fuel-based resources,” she said.
In addition to domestic efforts, India has taken the lead on numerous international platforms for climate action.
Murmu expressed gratitude for Fiji’s enthusiastic support of initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and Infrastructure for Resilient Island States.
She also voiced hope that Fiji would soon formally join the Global Biofuel Alliance as well.
“As a powerful voice of the Global South, India will keep pushing the developed countries for both climate finance and climate technology,” Murmu said.
“We will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Fiji and other Ocean States for climate justice.”
She urged Fiji and India to collaborate closely.
“As India emerges strongly on the global stage, we stand ready to partner with Fiji according to your priorities to build a stronger, resilient, and more prosperous nation.
“Let us come together to unlock the full potential in our partnership for the mutual benefit of the people of both our beloved countries,” Murmu emphasised.
