Cook Islanders along with developing countries are encouraged to apply for a training opportunity in sea bed mineral activities career planning and development

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is offering training opportunities to developing countries and the Cook Islanders are encouraged to apply.

Seabed Minerals Authority geographical information systems officer Rima Browne says as the country continues to progress in this sector it is important that the capacity of Cook Islanders is also progressed so that people have the skills and qualifications to fill potential roles and jobs in this sector.

“The ISA is one avenue in which we pursue in order to achieve that goal.”

Browne said the exposure of Cook Islanders to these technical and high-pressure environments will benefit career planning and development for the individual as well as build in-country resources.

“It is envisaged that what an individual will learn during their training will then be passed on to more locals upon their return home.

“We encourage our people to take full advantage of these opportunities and to not let them go to waste. Our office is happy to help with applications where possible.”

The applications are open for two at-sea training opportunities for candidates from developing States members of the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

The placements are provided by Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd (Kiribati).

Browne said the ISA is a United Nations body that regulates seabed minerals activities in international waters, and the Cook Islands is a member country.

Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) is responsible for sharing information about the international body’s training opportunities.

Browne says there are numerous opportunities provided from workshops and conferences to at-sea training and Masters and PhD studies, varying across multiple disciplines. This training can last up to three days, three months or a year depending on what is on offer.

Interested candidates should apply no later than April 9, 2021. For more information about this opportunity and on how to apply visit https://isa.org.jm/training/contractor-training/Marawa_Research_and_Exploration
